Conducting an effective client intake process isn’t just good practice—it’s an ethical obligation. Attorneys must navigate early conversations with care to avoid inadvertently creating an attorney-client relationship, breaching confidentiality, or missing conflicts of interest. The intake process is your first opportunity to screen for red flags, set clear expectations, and comply with key legal ethics rules. Failing to do so can lead to disciplinary action, malpractice claims, or both.
