Course Description

Length: 59min    Published: 12/30/2016
Bias in the courtroom is a prevalent problem. Bias exists in all people. The ability to recognize your biases and the biases of your opponent can save or lose your case.

Black’s Law Dictionary Ninth Edition identifies 4 types of bias in the courtroom. Not on the list of biases is “Expert Witness Bias.” As a legal professional a responsibility is to recognize whether your expert witness is succumbing to unconscious biases that will be exposed in deposition or trial. We all have biases, learn to overcome yours and deliver a foolproof testimony.

This presentation introduces the four forms of courtroom biases plus expert witness bias. You learn how to recognize these biases in yourself, your expert witness, and the opposition.

After this seminar you will:

- Effectively recognize and reduce your biases

- Know how to counter the biases of the opposition

- Determine whether your forensic examiner’s report is biased

- Recognize the effects of bias on forensic examiners' opinions

- Make implicit biases work in your favor

- Learn how biases impact the jury’s perspective

   Audrey S

"Interesting. It covered some areas in which I have had cases and dealt with experts such as the speaker but have not seen a course like this before. His candidness about experts is appreciated. I may want to use him as an expert in one of our upcoming cases."

   Robert Z

"I appreciated Mr. Wakshull's unique perspective on the topic of bias. I have never heard a presentation on this topic given by someone who serves as a forensic expert and has to work with attorneys, clients, and judges, each of whom may have particular biases based on their roles in a case. It was very interesting. I will look up his writings on the Zodiac killer!"
