Illinois CLE Requirements

Illinois's Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) Requirement:
The State Bar of Illinois requires attorneys to complete 30 Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit hours every 2 years, including 6 hours of professional responsibility. Of those 6 professional responsibility hours, 1 hour must be in diversity/inclusion and 1 hour must be in mental health/substance abuse.

Illinois MCLE Deadline:
The Illinois State Bar groups attorneys into 1 of 2 compliance groups depending on their last name. The MCLE deadlines for these groups are:

   Group 1 (Last Name A-M)
   Compliance Deadline: June 30th, Every Even Year

   Group 2 (Last Name N-Z)
   Compliance Deadline: June 30th, Every Odd Year

Illinois MCLE Reporting Deadline: 
Illinois attorneys have until July 31st to report the CLE hours earned by June 30th of their compliance period. Courses taken online with LexVid will be reported to the Illinois State Bar by LexVid on the attorneys behalf.

How do I report my Illinois MCLE compliance?
Your credits will be reported by LexVid and appear on your MCLE transcript no later than the 15th day of the month following the month in which you completed the course.

What if I'm a newly admitted attorney in Illinois?
Newly admitted attorneys must complete their requirements with in 1 year of being admitted to the Illinois State Bar. 

Can I carry over extra Illinois MCLE credit hours?
Yes, you can! IL Attorneys can carry over up to 10 MCLE credits earned prior to the beginning of their reporting period, including professional responsibility credits.
