Alabama CLE Requirements Overview

The Alabama State Bar mandates that all active attorneys complete 12 CLE credit hours annually, which must include at least 1 hour dedicated to ethics or professionalism. Additionally, at least 6 of the 12 hours CLE hours must be completed via live course - the remaining hours may be taken with on-demand courses

These requirements must be fulfilled by December 31 each year. Attorneys have until February 15 of the following year to report their completed CLE credits.

Live vs. On-Demand CLE Credits

Alabama distinguishes between live and on-demand CLE credits:

  • Live Credits: A minimum of 6 hours must be obtained through live programs. These can include in-person seminars or live webcasts where real-time interaction is possible.

  • On-Demand Credits: Up to 6 hours can be earned via on-demand courses. These are pre-recorded sessions that attorneys can complete at their convenience.

It's important to note that self-study courses without interactive components or instructor availability do not qualify for CLE credit in Alabama.

Exemptions and Carryover Credits

Certain attorneys may qualify for exemptions from CLE requirements, including:

  • Public Officials: Attorneys holding public office positions that prohibit private practice.

  • Senior Attorneys: Those who have reached the age of 65 or have begun receiving Social Security benefits.

  • Out-of-State Practitioners: Attorneys who reside and practice primarily in another state with its own CLE requirements, provided they demonstrate compliance with their home state's CLE mandates.

Additionally, attorneys can carry over up to 12 CLE credits, including 1 ethics hour, to the next reporting year if these credits are earned after admission and reported by the deadline.
